Working with different colors in crochet can be easily achieved with stripes, working separate pieces in different colors. Working shapes or geometric patters such as circles, triangles or image shapes is a different story. Much like fair isle or intarsia knitting, you carry yarn in back or work with different color bobbins. Geometric patterns are so much a trend right now in home decor. The simplest circle or triangle can be worked with maximum effect. Retro picture images are also very popular. Think background in color tapestry and making the project 3-dimensional with added embellishment. Pretty beads were always a weakness. Whether I was roaming the flea markets and vintage stores or shopping in one of the city's bead stores, an unusual color or bead never escaped my eye. Needless to say, the beads accumulated along with the broken necklaces that had wonderful vintage beads. Crocheted bead necklaces made with semi-precious stones are beautiful but can be quite expensive. Using unexpected pieces such as hardware washers or wooden rings mixed in with donut gems can result in an unconventional yet very special piece. Try crocheting with different components such as the fringe necklace. Crochet was worked around the tape the fringe is attached to. The example shown is two worked lengths of fringe, each worked in a different color, then stitched together. Beaded safety pins can be threaded and dangle between beads. Try spraying the safety pins in black or bronze for a different effect. Actual pebbles or shards can be covered and used as pendants. The possibilities are endless. Below are a few examples of necklaces, ones I've made and wear quite often loving the rustic, unpretentious quality. Each vary in style from a simple crocheted chain of matte beads to elongating a lovely choker piece made some time ago. My preference in each case was the same washed black cotton yarn, a dark base highlighting the colored stones and beads. In addition to the yarn, the only stitches used are chain and single crochet.

Needlecrafts - Knit, Crochet & Craft with Scrap Yarn

There's something about scrap yarn projects, whether knit or crochet that draws my eye, with it's humble yet very unique finish.
Of course, there is the happy melding of colors, but I've seen examples where you would have thought the outcome would be disastrous and yet the placement of colors turned out amazing.
Several design ideas are highlighted in the inspiration images above but any favorite pattern you already have whether knit or crochet will do just fine. More importantly, you are using up small amounts of yarn that live deep in your closet, somewhere, never to see the light of day. Another thought is to gather all these bits and have them available to craft with on rainy days, whether at home or at the cottage. Always handy and a good way to bust boredom. Traditionally, one thinks of scrap yarn for blankets or afghans.

During the holiday season people, especially family, seem to gather together more often. The McGuire clan is big and getting bigger so it seems there is always an occasion or reason to party.
Everyone contributes a dish of some kind and more often than not, I seem to bring a cake. Presentation is important and placing the cake on a cake stand you've made is always appreciated.
Treats are gobbled up quickly. One sister-in-law is famous for her spiced nuts, an easy, munchy snack and another for her savoury dip. Both are great with wine and beer.
Flowers or seasonal plants are always festive and brighten up a table or sideboard buffet spread.
Candles set the mood and depending on the design, like the memory candle, can start conversations about events that happened during the year.
