To buy garment or pattern: Visit redbootyarnworks on Etsy
For those who are ready to try it on their own, get your yarn and crochet hooks ready...it's not difficult and the outcome will be rewarding. What I've always loved about crochet is the portability of the craft. You can do it anywhere.
What yarn do I use?
Worsted weight yarn would be the best choice for a beginner as it works up quickly and is universally available in all price ranges and qualities.
Do I have to worry if my stitches are loose or too tight?
Sizing can be an issue when making a garment and I've seen some real "misfits" which is why a wrap is a wise and safe choice. Not only do you get to practise your basic skills, but in the end you get something that will fit, looks good and more importantly, has been personalized by you. Fashions that have a "handmade look" are very popular and can be pricey.
What stitch do I use?
There are many easy-to-follow crochet videos and step-by-step instructions available online on how to begin to crochet.I would also recommend working the wrap totally in dc - double crochet.
This easy stitch can be worked up in stripes or in a combination of yarn types, such as tweeds with solids or multi-colour yarns. The possibilities are endless.
Getting Started
To help you get started, here is a video produced by Lion Brand Yarns. Be sure to visit their website and Youtube channel for other helpful videos and information on yarn types and weights.

How long do I make it and how wide should it be?
The sketch below is a schematic of the wrap. Basically, a schematic is a diagram or drawing with dimensions, very helpful in giving you an idea of what you are going to make and how it will look.

  1. For this pattern, the two end pieces are crocheted in different direction. Is the center piece made separately and joined later or is there a way to continue it all in one piece?

    1. As you've noted the ends are worked in different directions. You are best to make the center piece first and work off each end separately.
For measurements and other pattern specifics, you would have to purchase the pattern from
redbootyarnworks.com - there is a link to the designer's pattern and site under the first image.
      All the best,

  2. The schematic is 26 x 66. The pattern comments from the designer say 15 x 55.5. Quite a difference - just wondering.

    1. Hi Joyce,
The schematic for the wrap was not meant to replicate the one in the inspiration image.
there is a notation under the image where you could buy the pattern or finished garment from the designer, redbootyarnworks on Etsy. There also is the link to the pattern.
All the best with your project,

    1. Hi Ana,
I did not make the shawl...the first image is a pattern available for purchase on Etsy.. the link is given. Amounts depend on the weight of yarn you use.

  4. Thank you so much for the inspiration and the measurements! I made a couple of these and the size was perfect. I did a corner to corner stitch in the center and ribbed stitch on the ends.

  5. Hi , I've just come across this lovely design! I'm new to crochet but going to give it a go! What does the back of the shawl look like on? Hoping it's as good as the front! Sue from Yorkshire

    1. Hi Sue,
As you can see from the image, it is basically double (in British terms triple) crochet with ends worked in a different direction. Pattern is available (click on link) for purchase from the designer.
      All the best,
      Daria
